In order to mark the “Global day of action against
war”, a group of Italian supporters of Barack Obama held a support rally for
their candidate in front of the U.S housing estate near Ederle Camp in Vicenza
(Italy) on Saturday January 26th 2008. Several U.S. soldiers' family members
spontaneously joined the rally in an act of pan-Atlantic
solidarity.
An
Italian supporter declared: “I’m sure that if Obama wins the next U.S
election, he will scrap plans of building the new U.S army base at 'Dal Molin'
airport in Vicenza”. The “Dal Molin” army base is a project widely opposed by
the local community, which over the past two years has been staging massive
protests attended by hundreds of thousands of
citizens.
The
young wife of an Oklahoma soldier stated: “I only wish my husband came home.
I’m pretty sure Obama will withdraw troops from Irak. That’s why I'm gonna
vote for him” She was cheered by locals, who broke into rounds of applause and
started chanting slogans: “Obama for President. Con Obama si può, con Obama si
può”.
